After the rape of The Lost Boys good name that was last year’s The Tribe, I can’t help but sneer at the thought of a third installment. Perhaps this one will be a genuine sequel instead of a cock-eyed remake with a side of tits and a dip dish of expletives.

Now I unabashedly say I am a part of the fandom and I’m in close contact with many die-hard Lost Boys fans. Much excremental matter splattered against many rotating devises when people saw the monstrosity of the movie that is now being buried under Represitol and heavy therapy. The one consistency across all Lost Boys boards was that the best part of the movie was when it was over. And not just because the pain of the celluloid nightmare had finally ended but because the best parts weren’t actually in the movie.

Corey Feldman reprising his role as Edgar Frog was a constant source of reprieve for Lost Boys fans but it was like getting a three second break before a massive fist worked over your face for another fifteen minutes. The time back to real Lost Boys world was lovely, but it just made it more painful to fall back into cheap imitation.

The real moments of glory, though, were reuniting Edgar Frog and Sam Emerson, with Corey Haim in full fang, and Alan Frog, played by none other than Jamison Newlander, tearing down the road with a blood slut on his arm and a beast of a car between his legs. These nanoseconds of sheer glory were enough to make the fans go, “WTF??? Why didn’t you give us that???” The movie was a massive failure (yeah, yeah, largest grossing DVD for Warner Brothers last year, but have you checked the turn around on places like eBay and Amazon?) but those snippets of story that turned all our balls blue gave us hope that maybe, just maybe, Warner Brothers wouldn’t shove a stake up our collective asses and tell us to take it like good little fans again.

Now that it’s been “confirmed” that TLB3 is, indeed, sludging it’s way to production, it leaves us with a few questions. Has Warner Brothers learned from their mistakes? Will they actually listen to the fans since, you know, the fans are going to be the ones buying their product? Will they show a modicum of respect for the original movie instead of pulling the cash cow’s teets to milk dust? Will they be able to revive Sam, Edgar and Alan to their once previous glory, and as of late teaser glory, in this third installment?

So I stand here with my pen in twitching hand and a pad of paper getting dotted underneath as I wait for Jamison to emerge so I can squeeze some juice out of him.

Jamison! How’s it going? How about taking a few minutes out of your busy schedule to answer a few questions about this third Lost Boys being spawned? To be Lost Boys cliché, inquiring minds want to know.

Okay, I hear that you’re angry . …In all seriousness, I’ve talked to a lot of fans since “Lost Boys: The Tribe” came out and there are a lot of totally different reactions. You may be surprised to hear the some people loved it. But, I think that a common theme across the board whether people loved it or liked it or didn’t like it – or, as you put it, felt like “…a massive fist worked over your face” – a common theme is that people wanted to see more of the Frog Brothers and the Coreys – or maybe that’s just what they told me (maybe they’ve been telling Chance Corbitt that they wanted to see more Laddie…I know I do). I think the studio has been hearing that loud and clear (or at least, that’s what they’ve been telling me).

We’re definitely not lying about seeing you guys on film but uh, I’m wont to check the validity of those Lost Boys “fans” that actually liked The Tribe. I’ve yet to meet, well, any.

Ok, so it’s been “released” that TLB3 is going to be made. Please tell us it’s not going to be the dignity destroyer that The Tribe was.

The problem with me saying anything for certain right now is that it has only been “rumored” that there will be a Lost Boys 3. And it has only been “rumored” that I’m going to be in it – so, I don’t want to say anything that would make the studio mad at me. I’ll simply say that I have been in contact with the folks at Warner Bros. and also, of course, with Corey Feldman – who is a friend (by the way, Haim’s a friend too, so it’s not like I’m taking sides – I’m Corey neutral). I don’t think there is a script yet, but I know that they seem to be quite serious about the Frogs being heavily involved.

Well that’s good. Lets all pray that they actually stick to their word.

Can you give us anything on the premise? Will we learn why Sam was locked up, what happened to Alan, how all of them ended up where they are? Anything?

Oh, no you don’t. You’re trying to get me to slip up and tell that – aha, you almost caught me. To be honest, while I’ve heard some really cool ideas bounced around, I’m still in the position of anxiously awaiting something more solid just like everybody else.

Hey, I can try, can’t I? Doesn’t mean I’m going to stop poking.

Have Warner Brothers heard the cries of the fans on this one? Are they going to give us what we want? And, of course, what we want is more Frog BrotherS. Plural.

Again, it’s probably because I’m a Frog Brother that people say this to me, but I’ve been on the good end of all kinds of love for over 20 years – people wanting to see more Frogs. And I think this our time is coming!!!!! I think the era of Frog is upon us!!!!!! (but again, I can’t say for sure). And, I appreciate that you specified Frog BrotherS. It can be touchy all this talk of Edgar Frog. 

I’m the type of person to tell you you’re drooling on yourself instead of saying you look great when you have a puddle forming on your chest, so when I say I want more Frogs, I want more Frogs, dammit! And a lone Monster Basher is just lame. Edgar wouldn’t be Edgar without Alan. Plain and simple.

Was putting you and the two Coreys in those extended scenes a ploy to lead into this third movie? I have a few little messenger birdies that tell me that the option for a third movie was always there.

I think, if anybody on the Lost Boys team said they weren’t thinking about a third one even before the first sequel came out, I’d contend they were lying. I think everybody wants this to continue – I think The Tribe was the tip of the iceberg. It was everybody getting their feet wet again, reviving it, getting it breathing again, feeding it a little blood to get its energy up (you know, using vampire metaphor – badly). As far as putting us in the “extended scenes” – yes, I believe it was definitely a way of leaving their options open.

I can only hope they’ve gotten their “lets make shit” out of their system with The Tribe.

So you’ll be getting more than seven seconds of screen time in this one, right? RIGHT? Because I have some very angry fans on my hands that are destroying poor defenseless stress balls over the fact that you were shafted in the second movie.

I love the visual of people destroying stress balls because I was only in The Tribe briefly. Again, I fear if I try to comment on this, I may slip into giving something away that I shouldn’t be giving away – so, I’ll pass on this one. But I want to tell you what I know, or at least what I think I know. But not yet.

Not yet? Do you have any idea how anxious we all are??? Fine . . .

As a new father, I have to listen to my little boy cry his eyes out in his crib – yet sit on my hands for 10 minutes before going in to comfort him. I’ve learned how to hold back even when I don’t want to.  Again, I wish I could give you more right now. Soon. Soon. I feel your pain.

So your character, Alan. Slight change from the first movie. I know it’s been 20 years since the first but talk about the personality shift that Alan’s had to take going from Awesome Monster Basher to Awesome Monster Bashed. And which do you like playing better and why?

I have to take the fifth on this one too. Sorry. Soon, I hope I’ll be able to talk about it more freely.

*grumble*

Speaking of Alan being a vampire, who made him and just how did he become a master? Was David in on this?

Pleading the fifth.

*headdesk*

And what does this mean for the previously inseparable dynamic between Alan and Edgar? Tension much?

For this one, I’ll comment in general that when Lost Boys: The Tribe was premiered at Comicon in San Diego last year, Corey and I participated in the panel discussion afterwards AS THE FROG BROTHERS!! (there are some pictures floating around somewhere). We came out in army fatigues. And aside from how fun it was that the crowd was having a blast, it was great to be side-by-side as the Frogs again for a few minutes. I hope that whatever the future of the Frog Brothers, we get a chance to be side-by-side again.

That’s a good dodge there, Jamison. Good dodge.

It’s been said that Corey Feldman has signed on to executive produce the movie. How do you think that‘ll turn out?

No official comment on that except to say that the Feld-dog has really impressed me with how creative and on top of things he can be. If that’s how it plays out – with him exec producing – I think it would be a good thing for the movie.

After The Tribe, a slug in a bowler hat is a step up. Feldman should be able to do wonders.

Can you give us anything on the script? Anything that’ll give us hope that it won’t be an epic failure like The Tribe?

Nothing official. But, I have high hopes.

Damn you and your high hopes!

Kiefer Sutherland, the one and only David, had some not nice things to say about The Tribe. I quote, “Lost Boys was a massive part of my life, it still is,” Sutherland told Shock Til You Drop. “You can’t crap on that. And I’m not going to go out and do a cameo in a DVD release sequel. Why they never talked to Joel Schumacher in the past 15 years about doing a proper sequel… If you’re not going to embrace what you’re coming from in its original state…” What do you think about that? With hindsight, do you share any of the same feelings?

I think people should listen to Kiefer, and what he has to say. He’s awesome and him being such a badass as David was part of what made the first one so awesome. I don’t really know the politics of the sequel– was that true that they didn’t listen to Joel? He probably has a point about that, then. Joel’s a badass too. But I still think there’s more that we can do with these characters – I think there’s more that fans want to see from these characters. I’m happy we’re continuing, regardless of whose ideas move it forward.

With Joel, there were some things mentioned on the special edition DVD of The Lost Boys as well as rumors circling around for years. Gotta love loose lips!

Speaking of Joel Schumacher, can you give any insight as to why he wasn’t involved in any of this sequel business, or why his Lost Girls idea was never made? From where I stand, it seems rather political.

Ah, yes. I jumped the gun, talking about the politics in my last answer. In my experience, there is politics in everything and I was never really able to keep up with the Lost Boys politics. Are you sure that Joel wasn’t involved at all?

From what my birdies tell he, he was left in the dust which is a damn shame. Joel would have never allowed The Tribe to see the light of day.

And how about Corey Haim? All of the articles are saying that his appearance in this installment is highly unlikely. Um, Awesome Monster Bashers have three major components – Edgar, Alan and Sam. Does this have anything to do with the reported heat between the two Coreys?

As I said, I am Corey neutral. I am a product of a broken home, myself. So any back and forth between the Coreys, I try to stay out of it. It reminds me too much of my childhood. If anybody listened to me, I’d say let’s have the whole gang back together.

Lets hope they listen then.

Should we expect constant news briefs going back and forth that Haim is, isn’t, is, isn’t involved until the release of the film, again?

The Lost Boys 3 roller coaster is leaving the station and where she stops nobody knows. With the Tribe, I was with Haim – in it, then out of it, then in it again. So, I think it’s too early to say how many surprises there’ll be. All we can do is hold on and enjoy the ride.

Very true. The surprises kept coming with The Tribe. Lets hope the final one isn’t such of a shock.

How do you think this third installment will pan out? Do you think it’ll be a positive? The fans trust you. Can you say this one will be set to higher expectations and standards than the last?

That’s nice of you to say that the fans trust me. I’ve always tried to be as honest as possible when I talk to people. And right now I will not betray that trust by guessing too much. When I know more, I’ll let you know. For now, we’ll just say that I have high hopes.

In the next interview, you are hereby banned from saying you have “high hopes.”

Anything else you’re working on? These birds, they don’t stop tweeting, I swear. I hear you’re directing a play?

Yeah, somewhere along the line I started writing – which some fans know about. But not many know that I think live theater is the hottest thing ever. This group I work with a bunch, Company of Angels, is the oldest theater company in Los Angeles – celebrating a 50 year anniversary this year. We convinced the Alexandria Hotel in downtown L.A. to give us space and let us build a theater. So, we did, and now we’re doing a show about some of the famous old-time movie actors and actresses that lived there in its heyday in the 1920s. My play is called “Goodbye, Mary Pickford,” a kind of a twist on the famous meeting between Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks where they created the film studio United Artists in the lobby of the Alexandria hotel. And being the control freak I am sometimes, I decided to direct it myself. I’ll send you some press photos when we take them in the next couple of weeks. If there’s anybody reading this who wants to come and see it, I’d love to see you there – and make sure to come introduce yourself to me when you come. Check it out at companyofangelstheater.org or reserve tickets at brownpapertickets.com (typing in my name should bring up the title of the whole event, L.A. Views: Tales of Present Past).

That’s awesome to see you’re so involved with the stage. It must be thrilling!

How’s your little boy? How does he feel about daddy playing a gnarly vampire? Does he prefer the Rambo vampire hunter to the fangs?

He hasn’t said much about it yet. I think he wants me to be bad. But, Nathan is the greatest little kid. He’s healthy and happy and Hanny and I just adore him.

So there. The pen’s still twitching and I still have a little bit of a sneer but at least it’s not surfing vampires. Yet. That alone is a step up. High hopes, they are there.

The blood cherry on the vampire sundae–

*And when I say no promises, I mean no promises that anyone will even listen to Jamison when he gets a chance to speak, let alone use any of these ideas in the movie (and no, he is not writing the movie’s script). Consider this place a sounding board with a hell of a better chance that the right eyes will see it than anywhere else. And if you happen to see something you mentioned here in the third movie, don’t expect to get credited for it either. Again, sounding board. And you can’t copyright ideas. So if you’re paranoid about people ganking your ideas and not giving you credit, don’t post them here. But if you want to take the chance that maybe, just maybe, we can influence this sucker, speak up and speak loud.
